Verified Purchase. Don't I wish. Compared to the other two Lightroom books I own this one In short Martin Evening is unbelievably expert at putting Lightroom through its paces, and even better at explaining it to mere mortals like myself. This guy has forgotten more about Lightroom than the entire collection of other.
Lightroom book authors ever knew! Even after investing hundreds of hours as a professional photographer in learning this software there are still many aspects of the program that remain beyond my grasp. And even those features I do understand and use on a daily basis ofttimes present me with difficult problems.
Happily the minute I began reading this beyond excellent Lightroom manual the fog began to clear and by day two I was already becoming more efficient and less frustrated.
Now I see why others Lightroom users often speak glowingly of Martin Evening! He is truly a remarkable Lightroom expert in a field where other so-called experts often know just a bit more than me. One person found this helpful. If you need to wonder if you should use Photoshop or Lightroom, you should be using Lightroom, and this book is the book you need to understand why: Lightroom is faster, easier, and better for classic "darkroom" tasks than Photoshop.
Plus it will help you catalog, find, and work with your images, all without ever worrying about accidentally permanently altering an image.
As has been mentioned in other reviews, this is a really dense book. I'll pay full price for the LR 5 edition when it ships as my dog had a bit of a nibble on my LR 3 edition. If you want to know it all, or at least have it all available as a reference source, this is the book.
And it's written so well that even the complicated features of Lightroom like how to prevent preset contamination are easy to understand. Scott's consistently light humor prevalent in all his books always makes for an easy read.
At one point I thought I'd found something not covered by the book - the "constrain to warp" option in the crop panel. But of course, I found it - in a side note on page Rather than say that Kelby's book is for beginners to intermediate and Evening's book is for intermediate to advanced, I would state it this way: regardless of your experience, if you are really interested in Lightroom, this is the book for you.
I won't go into too much detail here, you can already find that in other reviews, but this is a great book that needs recognition. Not perfect by any means, but extremely readable. I've read an immense number of books in this style on various programs and topics and few are as read-able as this or are written in such a personable tone.
I thought there would be more on image editing and less about image organizing, but I'm glad there wasn't. Lightroom is one of the most powerful image organizing tools out there right now and you need some serious practice to be able to use it to full capacity, this was a great help getting started.
His advice on editing is pretty solid too. You won't find specifics of what settings for a head shot, how do I process my yellowstone shot, etc, but he gives some good general rules to use for getting started playing around with all the sliders in a meaningful way.
There wasn't anything here I could directly use to 'make an image great' but after working through this, I was way more comfortable adjusting the image in the correct order and achieving decent results.
I even went back and re-edited a lot of the images I worked on before buying this book. Some of the info here won't be relevant to beginners, but it's easy to skip past and come back later for reference. This book actually made me buy Martin's photoshop book as well which is also quite good. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. I bought Martin Evening's Lightroom manuals for versions 1 and 2, so it is testament to their usefulness that version 3 was ordered. It arrived over 2 weeks ago and has been in my hand at every possible opportunity since.
One could expect that the latest version would be a repetition of what went before with sections added relating to new functionality, but I am happy to report that the book is virtually a complete re-write.
I will not say that every nook and cranny has been revisited, but in the main, there are very few instances where a topic has not been enhanced. This mirrors LR3 itself, as few areas have escaped the quest for improvement. As usual, Martin Evenings style is relaxed, chatty, clearly written and very informative, with useful examples to supplement the theory.
I have to admit that I struggled to detect differences in a few of the before and after images, however this must be down to the printing process and my ageing eyes. Perhaps more of the examples could be made available for download to assist readers in the identification of differences. I found that the section on sharpening and noise reduction could have been a little more comprehensive, but note Martin's reference to the Real World Sharpening book by Bruce Fraser and Jeff Schewe.
This tome extends to pages, and in fairness, the objective of this manual is to describe LR3 and not provide an exhaustive explanation of every underlying theory. In a nutshell, in my opinion Martin Evening still wears the crown for the Lightroom manual, and by a considerable distance. It is a great initial read, obviously massively useful for reference purposes, and worth every penny. Although this manual would be immediately beneficial to intermediate and more advanced users, it should not be particularly daunting to novice users.
Highly recommended - buy with confidence. Whilst RWIS goes to great depths to explain the background to sharpening, I find that the examples and advice provided in the LR3 manual to be as comprehensive and definitely on a par with those contained for Lightroom in RWIS. My apologies to Martin Evening and any potential purchaser who may have been swayed by my initial thoughts. If it were possible to award 6 points for this excellent publication, that would be my assessment.
Lightroom 3 is the first version of the software I have any real experience with. I had been using lightroom since the lightroom 3 beta, and once that beta expired I couldn't live without it.
After about a month of using the real version, despite having a good feel for many of the basic controls, I still felt like some of lighroom's controls were just mysterious sliders and buttons to me, and I wasn't getting the full potential from my photos by clicking auto tone for a large proportion of pictures.
The complete guide really is very nearly complete. It goes into great depth about every area you need to know about. The very first time I opened the book and flicked to a random page, I discovered a feature I had never even noticed before on the interface.
The book explains the features and then takes you through a step by step example with screenshots for each step, clearly describing the effect of each one. It is very useful to see the examples of how multiple controls can be used together, such as the toning controls, to get the best out of your pictures. I would subtract half a star as in some places I feel the level of detail is possibly excessive, listing all of the control methods more than once.
For previous users of lightroom 2, it highlights areas where lightroom 3 has been improved. Overall this book is highly recommended for anyone who wants to get the most out of lightroom, expert or novice.
I was a new user of Lightroom and it was apparent from the off that if I was going to get the most out of the software then I was going to need help. Of course these days software doesn't come with a manual, just the online help, which I've only ever found useful in answering specific questions rather than in getting to grips with the software. Of course you could find any amount of information on line, but I find there's nothing better than a good old fashioned lump of wood, cut up into thin slices and painted with words.
So if you're you're like me then buy this book. Yep I hate it and love it but you need this book or some other book to learn what to do as Light room it is not at all intuitive. I have Martin Evening's Photoshop book and this is the same high quality detail intensive nothing left out kind of book. It would appear that Martin is a Photoshop insider and it may be that this allows him a view that other authors may not have. So it is all here in some pages Well illustrated some photo how to pages go on for 3 or 4 pages so the number is just a total and you will breeze through pages that show screen shots with what Mr.
Martin has done during those screen shots. Highly recomended. Martin Evening writes the most comprehensive books on Photoshop, and now, Lightroom. The most difficult aspects of both of these software packages is their complexity; many features, deep menus, and multiple paths for your workflow.
In addition the user interface can be intimidating as many so-called hot keys or keyboard shortcuts are 'overloaded' with alternate actions if the Shift, Control or Alt keys or 'chords' of these are depressed. Martin's books lead you through all the features in Lightroom, and is very comprehensive. The book does provide step-by-step recipes for accomplishing many common tasks so you do get some excellent guidance, but by no means is this a 'book of recipes'. The recipe books are typically very useful if they cover the tasks you need, but do not provide the underlying reasons for doing things in their specific way.
This is a very detailed book and explains the program in great detail. The language within the book is very technical and requires a real understanding of the science of photography. But using the book and the detailed videos within the Lightroom program it is possible to understand and use Lightroom to enhance photos.
It's introduction to Lightroom and explains the basics features, how to use it in your photographic workflow, and some advanced techniques in digital photo processing. I also have the essentially redundant books from Adobe Press and Scott Kelby. I prefer this book's writing style, its features chosen to explore in detail, and the overall results from its recommended system to develop photos. However, if you have Mr. Evening's earlier books for Lightroom 1, 2, 3, or 4 you really don't need this book.
The changes in Lightroom between versions are mostly minor improvements with a new feature or two thrown it to get you to upgrade. If you have a good understanding of the product from an earlier book, learning the changes from the next Lightroom release from Adobe marketing or web tutorials is a quicker and cheaper way to go. I bought versions 1 through 5 because I'm just that way. Having read them all I now know I didn't need to. Having a copy is essential.
Having multiple is an unnecessary extravagance. Martin Evening has a long teaching and writing experience and does so clearly. It is a good idea in the first instance to follow the book page by page with LR5 running in the background containing a variety of image examples that you can practice on as you go. Preferably pick poor exposures or contrast limited pictures to work on but almost anything will do.
Highly recommended. One person found this helpful. Excellent book especially for anyone wanting to learn the why and how to do things.
Not for the casual or quick read. I had been struggling to get up to speed with Lightroom and found this book very good. It helped that I was reasonably familiar with Photoshop but then that also may have been my problem is some respects. This is a book I am going to use for reference. This book is not for the faint at heart. If you want a "professional level" description of Lightroom, this is your book. If your looking for a general guide with some pointers, keep looking.
I found this to be too complicated for me, a non-pro looking to do good edits on my family pics. For some people it might be too detailed, but if you want to learn everything it is the perfect book. More information, explained in a clear, concise manner than you could ever possibly memorize, this is the go-to book for those who want to become lightroom experts. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. Martin Evening writes well and clearly explains the subject under discussion.
It is a comprehansive book and perhaps not one for a quick glance at a problem. It goes into a fair amount of detail, and it if that is what you are looking for in a book about using software, it is absolutely first class, and I recommend it highly. This is quite a weighty tome but if you take things one step at a time it is not so daunting. Clear photos show what your screen will look like at each step and the written information is logical. That said, it would cost me a lot more to have a personal trainer at my side whenever I needed him.
Martin Evenings guides to Lightroom and Photoshop are probably the best available, written in a clear concise style and with plenty of illustrations to emphasize the topics - recommended for any serious photographic user of these programs. There are books written in a simpler style which cover the essential basics for the occasional user but Martins books are the most readable 'bibles' for these programs. Report abuse. This book arrived quicker than expected.
I think it will help me alot but it's quite complicated. Some basic items could have been introduced in a simpler way for those used to ordinary Elements programs until the program became more familiar. I expect to get the hang of it eventually!
